Antirrhinum majus ‘Snapstar Champagne’
DOUBLE CHAMPAGNE SNAPDRAGONS
Antirrhinum majus ‘Snapstar Champagne’ is a superb new “Azalea type” Snapdragon.
Because the flowers are so frilly, with exquisite double centres.
Frilly, fluffy, fully doubles like French champagne bubbles
Each stem is close packed with fluffy centred blooms, and the colour is superb – soft blends of champagne – like an excellent French bottle of bubbles.
But on plants with all the productive power of modern flower breeding.
Superb cut flowers for professional floristry
Stems of Antirrhinum majus ‘Snapstar Champagne’ are perfect for creating striking and elegant floral arrangements. And especially with that ever so stylish gentle colour.
Excellent vase life
They have excellent vase life, and last much longer in water than single and older varieties of Snapdragons.
Picking for extended vase life
For commercial floristry use – pick the stems when the bottom flowers on the stem are just opening, and before the bees have had their wicked way.
This will give good vase life of approximately 10-12 days.
Flower farmer’s delight
‘Snapstar Champagne’ has been carefully bred for modern commercial farming.
Exceptionally strong, long stems
So the stems are exceptionally stout, long and strong, and can reach up to 80 to 100cm.
Or you can also top the young plants (cut the tops out) when they are about 10cm. tall, and thus produce many more side flower stems, though they will be shorter on topped plants.
Long & continuous flower production
And it has a very long and continuous production of flower stems for harvesting.
Blooming right through summer and autumn up to the first frosts.
Producing well in either the open field or in the greenhouse, and rated as an “all season” variety, including having an excellent ability to bloom when temperatures are cool.
Tolerant of both heat & cold
It is also bred for winter flower production in sub-tropical areas.
So ‘Snapstar Champagne’ is able to produce under shorter day length conditions too, and designed to be both heat and cold tolerant.
Wonderful garden displays too
Fortunately Antirrhinum majus ‘Snapstar Champagne’ also stars in the home garden for floral display.
So it blooms long and hard in Full Sun, but will also perform creditably in Partly Shaded positions.
Super quick & easy from seed to flower
Antirrhinum majus ‘Snapstar Champagne’ usually comes to flower in around 100-110 days from sowing the seed.
Edible flowers
Snapdragon flowers are deliciously edible and make a sweet treat in salads, stir fries, fruit salads, drinks and as garnish.
So plant some in your veggie patch for both nibbling and cutting for vases.
Deer & rabbit resistant
Happily, Snapdragons are not high on the menu list for rabbits and deer, who usually pass them by for fodder they find tastier.
Snappies can go on from year to year
Antirrhinum majus is actually a short lived perennial and will go on blooming for several years if left in the garden over winter.
But because they are so quick and easy to raise from seed, and fast to bring to flower from seed, they are often grown as annual.
Personally I leave mine in the garden from year to year instead, and just trim them back to reshoot each spring.
80-100cm. High of frothy double, champagne blooms, on strong, much branched stems x 30-35cm Wide of neat, deep green foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids
Sow any time indoors in a punnet for an early start with flowers
OR
Scatter directly in garden in winter and spring.
Indoors for quick & early plants: First sow the seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then pat the surface lightly to ensure good contact of seeds to the mix, but do not cover with mix
Because these seeds need light to germinate.
Though you can use a very light sprinkling of vermiculite if you wish, just to help keep consistent moisture on the surface.
Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface of the mix from below.
Then place it in a warm, well lit position (not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 15-25C are best for optimum and rapid germination.
You can use a heat mat if you have one.
Though it is not essential as these seeds are willing germinators.
Continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
And covering the punnet with a clear cover or plastic bag will also help to maintain consistent moisture.
Remove cover once germination has commenced.
Seeds germinate in approx. 17-14 days.
Seed Count: 50 seeds approx. per pack.
(Seeds of this new variety are scarce – but we always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve)
