Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’
GREEN APPLES COLUMBINE

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’ has charming pom pom double flowers.

Double pom-pom flowers of soft apple-green & white

With delightful soft apple green and snow-white shades, amongst star pointed petals.

Dainty & charming

Aquilegias give an old world charm to the garden. So they are commonly called Columbines or Granny’s Bonnets.
And ‘Green Apples’ has a particularly dainty, airy appearance, with small, rounded leaves and tall flower stalks that hold the pretty blooms well above the foliage.

But tough as old boots

So do not let the dainty appearance fool you. Because this a hardy and tough survivor.
And once settled your ‘Green Apples’ should self-sow some extra babies each year.
And create drifts of plants under the trees and shrubs with little further help from you.

Water-wise & resilient

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’ blooms profusely during spring and early summer, and is such an easy growing, unfussy plant.

Thrives in either Sun or Shade

So you can plant ‘Green Apples’ in a wide variety of positions, from Full Sun, to Partial Shade, and in Full Shade too.

Lights up under trees & shrubs

And with it’s fresh, crisp colouring it is the perfect choice to light up dull shaded areas under trees and shrubs.

Water-wise & low care

Plus it is a water-wise and resilient plant once established, and easy, low care.

Frost hardy

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’ is very frost hardy, and can withstand frosts down to below -20C. That is a very bumper frost !!!

Thrives in a wide range of soils

Good old Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’ thrives in a wide range of soils – from acid to alkaline; from sandy to loam and heavier clay based soils.
But what they cannot abide is being water-logged.

Rabbit & deer resistant

Rabbits and deer do not enjoy the taste of Aquilegias and tend to ignore them. Cheers.

Cut whole branching stems for vases

Aquilegias make fine flowers for vases, and with their long, clean stems and branching heads of multiple flowers, they make good structure in a vase.

Evergreen perennial but also self-seeds new babies

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’ is an evergreen perennial plant.
But it will also supply new babies each year by self-sowing in the garden and creating graceful drifts (unless you deadhead of course and cut off the seed heads).
These little volunteers are easy to transplant to new areas, share with friends, or weed out if surplus to requirements.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Green Apples’

Seed can be sown indoors at any time when suitable temperatures are available (15-20°C).
OR
Scattered directly in the garden during autumn, winter or early spring.

Indoors for quick plants: First sow the seed onto the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now pat gently to ensure the seeds have good contact with the surface of the mix.
Then cover with sieved mix / washed sand / or fine grit to a depth of the seeds diameter.

Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
So the moisture percolates through to the top of the mix from the bottom.

Then place the moist, sown punnet in a warm, well lit position (but not in any direct sunlight).
Light helps germination of these seeds.
You can use a heat mat to speed germination and maintain optimum temperatures, if you have one, but it is not essential.

Temperatures of 15-20°C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle.

Seeds germinate in 2 to 4 weeks approx.

Then transplant seedlings into small pots until large enough to plant out in the garden.

If sown directly into ground seed may not germinate until its dormancy is broken by a period of chilling (Winter) so late autumn or early autumn sowings are most successful.

Seed Count: 15 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
