Digitalis purpurea ssp. heywoodii ‘Silver Fox’ is elegant and ghostly.

Elegant & ghostly

‘Silver Fox’ has silver-grey felted leaves all year, topped by classic white foxglove spires in spring.
With just a coy blush of pink and a smattering of speckles in the ghostly pale fox’s gloves.

Dwarf Foxy to suit any size garden

Digitalis purpurea ssp. heywoodii ‘Silver Fox’ is to my eye the most beautiful of all the dwarf Foxgloves.
Growing to just 60cm. approx. when in full flower, with a neat and very attractive foliage clump all year round, ‘Silver Fox’ will fit into any garden or colour scheme.

‘Silver Fox’ begins blooming in spring and goes right into the summer months.
With each flower opening in succession down the spires.
And many side spires continuing to be produced after the central spire.
So as spires finish, trim off the spent stems to encourage all the side flowers spires.

Easy & unfussy to grow

Digitalis purpurea ssp. heywoodii ‘Silver Fox’ enjoys Full Sun to Part Shade, in well drained soil.
Though by wearing it’s silver velvet cloak it is much more resistant to hot sun than many other Foxgloves.
But it will enjoy the dappled Light and Shade underneath trees and shrubs too, as long as it is well aired and not damp..
You can also prolong blooming over the warmer months, by mulching the area well, and giving a occasional deep watering.
It is thoroughly frost hardy.

‘Silver Fox’ is a very reliable self-seeding biennial.
So always leave a stem or two to go to seed. Or cut stems with seed pods and lay them down on the ground as a mulch where you would like next year’s crop of apricot towers.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow Digitalis seeds on surface of good quality compost outdoors in spring / or sow indoors at any time for maximum germination.

INDOORS: First sow Digitalis seeds on surface of good quality compost or seed raising mix at any time.
But do not cover with compost as these seeds need light to germinate.

Then thoroughly moisten the mix by standing the sown punnet in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface from below.

Now place the punnet in a warm, well-lit  place.
You can use a heat mat if you have one, but it is not essential, as these seeds are willing germinators.
And cover the punnet with a plastic lid to retain moisture.

Temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. are ideal for rapid and maximum germination.

Continue to keep moist at all times by misting from a spray water bottle, but do not saturate.

So germination occurs in 14 to 21 days approx.

Then pot on the seedlings to harden off and mature. Before finally planting out in the garden.
