Myrrhis odorata
SWEET CICELY

Sweet Cicely is an attractive plant, renowned for its aniseed taste and exquisite fragrance, hence the botanical name of Myrrhis odorata.

The deep green fern-like leaves are deeply divided and smell of aniseed when crushed.
The plants grow as a dense groundcover to a height of 80-90cm.
And fragrant heads of tiny white flowers appear from spring to early summer.

Myrrhis odorata makes a pretty groundcover that is hardy, easy to grow, and exceptionally fragrant.
And it is especially lovely planted beside a path where it can give of it’s fragrance every time you walk and brush it.
Grow it in Partial Sun, or Shade, and it thrives in woodland conditions under trees and shrubs.

Sweet Cecily is also an edible herb.
So used the foliage and flowers in any dishes where you need an aniseed or fennel flavour. Such as drinks, salads, soups, fish sauces, and vegetable dishes.
And the white flower heads also make a very pretty and edible garnish for drinks, salads, meat dishes etc.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Seeds of Myrrhis odorata are easily grown when sown directly outdoors in autumn.

The seeds then germinate freely after cold winter temperatures.

Keep a check on the seed raising mix, to ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Thin the seedlings in the outdoor bed as necessary and transplant the young plants into their final positions in the following spring.
