Primula capitata ssp. mooreana
SILVER CAP PRIMULA
SALE: Buy 1 get 2
Densely clustered heads of rich, deep violet-blue, with silver caps, make the sweet Primula capitata ssp. mooreana a very eye-catching sight.
Despite it’s dainty size, it really packs a wallop of colour and perfume in late winter and spring.
Sweetly, fetchingly perfumed.
But perhaps the fascinating part of this beauty is the farina (technical talk for the silver-white dust that covers the flowers and their caps, like a fine dusting of miller’s flour).
Primula capitata ssp. mooreana also provides delightful cut flowers for small vases.
Plant in Part Shade to Deep Shade. Deciduous shade is absolutely perfect.
Where the Silver Cap Primula is robustly frost hardy.
Make sure you prepare the garden spot well by digging in plenty of leaf mold, compost and old manure, so the soil is nicely retentive.
Because these little darlings enjoy heavier, retentive soil, and even damp or boggy spots.
So they are suitable for well maintained garden soil, pond sides and low damp spots, or where there is a automatic watering system to ensure regular moisture.
And mulch well for the summer.
But don’t let all this put you off. Primula capitata ssp. mooreana is easy to grow, and will even self-sow to make a colony, in the right spot.
Neat evergreen perennial clump, which is easy low maintenance.
20cm High adorable silver dusted flowers x 25cm Wide neat, evergreen rosette of foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Sow indoors in winter, spring or autumn / or scatter outdoors winter or spring.
Indoors:
(Sowing Tip: Primula seeds are very fine and tiny. So pop a little fine sieved mix or sand into the bag containing the seed, shake around to collect the seed, and then sow the whole contents of the bag).
Sow seeds in a punnet, on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then press gently to the surface of the mix.
But do not cover because these seeds need light to germinate.
Place sown, moist punnet in well-lit, cool position (not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 10°C. to a maximum of 15°C. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
So continue to keep in a cool position.
And continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Covering the punnet with a transparent lid such as a plastic bag is a great help in maintaining moisture.
Seedlings emerge in approx. 21-30 days.
But patience – do not discard the punnet too quickly – as it is natural for seeds to stagger their germination and continue to sprout after the first emerge.
Seed Count: 10 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
