Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum
ORNAMENTAL RHUBARB

The word ornamental does not do justice to Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum.
Sensationally ornamental would be better, or even AWESOME.

Outrageously handsome large leaves

Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum boasts HUGE leaves – each leaf up to 90cm. across !!!
With jagged edges and the most arresting colour transitions.

Arresting foliage colour transitions

Young leaves emerge in spring with vivid hues of crimson, purple and russet – wow it is a stunning colour splash.
Then as summer moves in the leaves grow ENORMOUS, with vivid purple-crimson stems and backs, and bronze-green uppers.
And the edge indentations become more deeply cut.

2m. flower plumes of rich magenta on crimson stems – WOW

Summer also brings towering, feathery plumes in rich colours of burgundy, pink and crimson, borne on deep crimson stems. Which eventually burst to tiny white flowers. WOW WOW WOW.

Variety tanguticum is the most intensely coloured

Rheum palmatum is splendid enough, but the variety tanguticum is the prize.
Because of its deeply intense colouring.

Flamboyant shade feature plant

Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum creates a sensation in partly to heavily shaded gardens.
Where it enjoys plenty of mulch, old leaves or compost – anything that keeps the soil retentive.
It also thrives in clay and heavy soils.
A little morning sun is OK, especially in cooler areas.
But in hot districts full shade is better – so those incredible broad leaves do not scorch.

Fabulous foliage for floristry

Cut foliage commands a high price for large floral arrangements.
Both the colouring and the size are prized.

Very tolerant to winter frosts & summer humidity

This bold beauty is very frost hardy and able to withstand temperatures down to at least -20°C.
But also tolerate summer humidity, as long as it is well shaded.
It develops monumental size if grown near a pond or stream, or in damp soil.

Deer & rabbit resistant

Rabbits and deer do not appreciate the taste of this fine plant.
Though do take precautions against slugs and snails in early spring when the gorgeous new leaves are emerging.

Nectar larder for pollinators

Bees, butterflies and our other pollinating friends just adore the nectar-rich haze of tiny summer flowers.

Ancient Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine uses the roots to treat many ailments, including constipation, ulcers and cancers.
But it should be used with extreme caution and expert knowledge, as it is considered harmful if consumed in excess.
*** Please note this plant is not an edible Rhubarb – ornamental only.

Hardy perennial

Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum forms a sensationally impressive perennial clump.
It is a long lived perennial and will grace a garden for many years – getting ever more impressive each year.
Up to 2m. high flower towers x 1 – 1.5m wide clump of achingly beautiful foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Seeds of Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum can be sown in spring and autumn indoors.

Sow indoors: First soak the seeds overnight in a glass of water.
Then sow individually on the surface of good quality seed raising mix in small, deeper pots.
And gently pat seeds to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact

Now lightly cover the seeds with approx. 3mm. of sieved mix.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface from below.

Then place in a warm, well-lit position (not in direct sun).

Temperatures of approx. 15-18°C are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep the mix consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid or plastic bag will also help to maintain the necessary consistent moisture.
Do not allow the seeds to ever dry out.

Seeds begin to germinate in approx. 28 days.

Seed Count: 10 seeds per packet.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
