SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Sow Seseli gummiferum at any time of year in punnets indoors, whenever suitable temperatures can be provided (15-21°C).
OR
Sow seeds directly in garden in autumn, winter or very early spring (they love a period of cold).

Sow indoors for optimum germination & early plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat the seeds to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.

Now barely cover the seed with a fine dusting of sieved mix / vermiculite / or grit.
But do not bury the seeds as these seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Place the moist, sown punnet in a well-lit place (but not in any direct sunlight as this will dry out the seeds and prevent germination).

Temperatures of 15-21°C. are ideal.
And you can use a heat mat to maintain temperature, if you have one.

Continue to keep the punnet consistently moist by regularly misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Placing a clear lid or plastic bag over the punnet will also help to maintain the necessary consistent moisture between mistings.

Seedlings usually begin to emerge in approx. 7-21 days.

However if the seeds are shy to germinate – this is natural dormancy, and they need a period of chilling to break their dormancy.
So wrap the moist, sown punnet in cling-wrap and place in the fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks. This will mimic the effect of winter and help break their natural dormancy.

After 4-6 weeks in the fridge – remove, unwrap, moisten again, and return the punnet to the well-lit position at 15-21°C.
Continue to keep consistently moist.

Prick out seedlings quickly as they emerge, as soon as they develop their first set of true leaves.
Because the little plants will quickly develop a strong tap root and will need food.

Pot on and grow ready to plant out in the garden.

Seed Count: 30 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
