SEED SOWING ADVICE: Persicaria bistorta

Seeds of Persicaria bistorta can be scattered directly in the garden during late autumn and in winter.
OR
Sow indoors in a punnet at any time when suitable temperatures can be provided (see below). Best done in autumn, winter or spring.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First sow the seed in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently press the seeds onto the surface of the mix, to ensure good contact.

Now cover the seeds lightly to a depth approx. equal to the size of the seeds.
And you can use sieved seed mix, fine grit, or vermiculite, to sprinkle over the seeds.

Then thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface from below.

Now place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position to pre-condition (not in any direct sun).
Temperatures of 18-22ÂșC for 2-4 weeks are optimum at this time.
And do use a temperature-controlled heat mat if you have one, to keep the heat up and encourage rapid germination.
Or a warm window-sill or well-lit corner are also fine.

Adding a clear plastic cover or plastic bag helps to retain consistent moisture in the punnet.

And continue to keep the punnet moist by spraying the surface of the mix with a fine spray water bottle as required.

Seedlings may germinate during this pre-conditioning.

A “pretend winter” may be needed

However a period of chilling may also be needed to break the seeds natural dormancy.
So wrap the moist punnet in cling-wrap or a plastic bag, and place in the fridge for 4-6 weeks.

Then bring out to a well-lit position for germination.
High temperatures are not required.

Prick out the seedlings as soon as they have developed their first set of true leaves, and grow on in pots to plant out into the garden.

Seed Count: 15 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
