While pretty strawberry like foliage forms a tidy rosette that is always attractive.
So it is a perfect plant for using along a front edge, or underplanting rose bushes.
Good cut flower for vases too
Plus the long, clean stems and delightful blooms make excellent cut flowers too.
Hardy & easy to grow

Where it is frost hardy and tolerates some dry once established.
Not a thirsty plant
Potentilla thurberi ‘Monarch’s Velvet’ is not a thirsty plant, particularly if it is mulched in the summer.
Mulching helps to keep the clump fresh and blooming in the hot weather.
Tolerates a wide range of soils including clay
‘Monarch’s Velvet’ tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, and all the way through good garden loam to sandy soils.
And in fact relishes clay that has been opened up with some organic matter.
It also tolerates a wide range of soil pH, from acid to alkaline.
Low maintenance plant
Potentilla nepalensis ‘Monarch’s Velvet’ is a very easy, low maintenance plant.
There is no essential pruning work, although you may like to trim off spent flower stems to encourage ever more rounds of blooming.
Not a favourite for rabbits & deer
Rabbits and deer tend to pass by ‘Monarch’s Velvet’ plants, on their way to tastier fodder.
The sprays of flowers on Potentilla thurberi ‘Monarch’s Velvet’ stand approx. 60-75 cm. tall and wave high above the 60cm wide, low clump of attractive foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Sow seed of Potentilla thurberi ‘Monarch’s Velvet’ indoors in winter, spring or autumn / or scatter outdoors winter or spring.
Sow indoors for maximum germination & quick plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat the seeds to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.
Thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface from below.
Now place the sown, moist punnet in well-lit position (not in any direct sunlight).
Because these seeds need light to germinate.
Temperatures of 15-20°C are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
You can use a heat mat if you have one to maintain optimum temperatures.
Continue to keep the punnet consistently moist by misting from a spray water-bottle.
Placing a clear lid or plastic bag over the punnet can also help to maintain consistent moisture.
Seedlings emerge in approx. 14-21 days.
